Rockwall: The Value of Live GPS Data In High School Football

How Rockwall High School's strength and conditioning coach uses PlayerData GPS tracking to manage load, monitor live data during practice, and build one of Texas's most competitive 6A football programs.

Andrew Molck has been in the coaching world since 1997. Since arriving at Rockwall High School in 2013, he’s helped build one of the most consistent programs in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, a program that made the playoffs and won at least one playoff game every year for eleven consecutive years.

However, last season was different. Rockwall lost four games by a touchdown or less and missed the playoffs for the first time in over a decade.

Molck isn’t dwelling on it. He’s fixing it.

“As the strength and conditioning coach I challenged myself to step it up a notch and create a plan based on historical data that would more effectively prepare the team from a work capacity stand point and to promote as many competitive opportunities as possible in training.”

Part of that step up is PlayerData football.

One of the Best Districts in the Country

Rockwall competes at the 6A level, the highest classification in Texas high school football, in one of the toughest districts in the state. The DFW Metroplex doesn’t have any weak links. Every Friday night is a test.

"It doesn't get any better than Texas and it doesn't get any better than the DFW Metroplex," Molck said. "Our district is one of the toughest in the state. There are no slouches."

The program produces Division I talent every year. One of their most notable recent alums includes last season’s NFL offensive MVP Jaxon Smith-Njigba who came through Rockwall High School, graduating in 2020.

This Friday, Rockwall opens their season against Prosper, a program that also uses PlayerData. Both teams using the best GPS trackers for high school football programs. One game. The highest level high school football in the country.

Third Year With GPS. First Year With Live Data.

Rockwall is in its third year using GPS technology for football, but this is the first year the program has had access to live data during practice. The difference has been immediate.

"PlayerData is superior to what we've had in the past," Molck said. "Especially having access to live data in practice. It's been a game changer for us this season."

Previously, the coaching staff had to wait until after practice to review data and then make adjustments for the following day. Now they can act in the moment.

"We can make decisions right there in time instead of waiting until after practice," Molck said. "We can do it live in practice now. We’ve caught players who reached our target metrics, and we know to reduce their reps for the rest of practice."

One practical change that has already improved the program's daily rhythm: athletes can now see their own data directly from their phones through the PlayerData app. Molck no longer has to manually share reports through a separate communication platform. The information reaches the right person automatically.

"They have it right there on their phone," Molck said. "They can see their own numbers right after practice."

The 90% Rule

The primary GPS metric Molck has built his in-season monitoring system around is simple: every athlete needs to hit 90% of their maximum speed two to three times within every seven to ten days.

It’s not about punishment. It’s about health.

"You want to be able to run fast when it's time to run fast," Molck said. "So you need to practice running fast to maintain that."

He tracks it every day, who hit the number, who didn’t. When athletes miss it during the natural flow of practice, they come with him during a special teams period and run a sprint. If they hit 90%, they’re good. If they don’t, that itself is an important signal.

"If they're not able to hit it, then there's something going on," he said. "We then know we need to get them in the training room and evaluate what's going on."

Preservation is essential. Molck has watched it play out on the field. Years ago, a free safety made a pursuit tackle at the two-yard line, stripped the ball, and recovered the fumble. It changed the momentum of the game. That kind of play only happens if the athlete is still running full speed when everyone else has given up.

"Our motto is JFND, Jacket Fight Never Dies," Molck said. "We're going to run to the football whether you think you can get there or not."

PlayerData's live GPS data makes it possible to know in real time whether that commitment is being met in practice, not just assumed.

GPS Data Builds Confidence

Coming into week one of the 2026 season, Molck looked at the numbers and felt something powerful: certainty.

"This is the healthiest and the most physically prepared we've been," he said. "Being able to look at data to confirm that instead of just going off the coach's eye and having a gut feeling, being able to look at metrics and put numbers to things gives you a little bit more confidence."

Rockwall's motto is Jacket Fight Never Dies. The data is helping them prove it.
